“Khoobsurat”, the much awaited film of star actress Sonam Kapoor, is a remake of the 1980 Rekha starrer film with the same name, which was directed by ace director Hrisikesh Mukherjee. The film also stars the talented Pakistani actor Fawad Khan and the expressive character artists, Kirron Kher and Ratna Pathak Shah. The movie is written by Indira Bisht and produced by Anil Kapoor, Rhea Kapoor and Siddharth Roy Kapoor. It has been distributed by UTV Movies, Walt Disney Pictures and Anil Kapoor Films Company. “Khoobsurat” has been directed by Shashanka Ghosh and released on 19th September, 2014. The trailer of the film has got a good response, with more than 35 lakh views on the You Tube.
The plot has been inspired by the hit film of Rekha, released in 1980. It is the story of a clash between a bubbly physiotherapist Mrinalini aka Mili (Sonam Kapoor) and the matriarchal maharani of a Rajasthan palace Nirmala Devi Rathod (Ratna Pathak Shah). Mili is employed to treat the palace patriarch Shekhar Rathod (Aamir Raza Hussain), who has been bound to a wheelchair since a decade. There is also a prince in the palace, Vikram Singh Rathod (Fawad Khan), who is an absolutely boring personality for Mili. Raised by a loud Punjabi mom (Kirron Kher), Mili is a total rebel, who knows nothing and cares a damn about the rules of the palace, which annoys the maharani beyond her limit of patience. She talks and eats loudly, drinks directly from the bottle and does everything which irritates the maharani. The film moves ahead with clashes between the two of them, which is the only part this movie shares with the original one.
Being inspired by a milestone movie of the Hindi cinema with a great actress of the eighties to play the title role, a comparison between the two is inevitable. But the fact remains that a classic will always be a classic. Still, the movie has been given full justice by brilliant performances of all the artists. While Sonam looks very convincing as her chirpy self, Fawad Khan showcases his talent in the stoic role. Aamir Raza Hussain and Ratna Pathak Shah fit amazingly in their roles and Kirron Kher, once again in the role of a loud Punjabi mom, seems repetitive and noisy. The brilliant dialogues by Gulzar have done a great favor to the film. They make the film is funny and witty, yet not too loud. Another notable thing about the movie is its melodious music by Sneha Khanwalkar, who has given a fresh new sound to the movie.
