5 Common Accidents and First Aid Tips

Whilst everyone can benefit from first aid tips and knowledge, it is more important for some people than others. For example employees who work in dangerous environments where workplace injury is more common, can benefit from having good first aid knowledge. Besides them, teachers and child care personnel should also be able to assist children immediately in the case of an emergency.

The fact is that accidents can happen at any time so there is the need for sound knowledge of first aid within the workplace and public environments.  All workplaces should have dedicated first aiders on hand but it is also a good idea to have everyone at least aware of the risks and potential incidents that could occur.  Here are the 5 common accidents that can occur at any time and at any place and swift first aid tips so that you know how to deal with such conditions:

  1. Heart Attack:

This is a common problem that happens to around 50,000 men and 32,000 women each year in England. A heart attack is a medical emergency and you should Dial 999 and ask for an ambulance if you think you or someone else is having a heart attack. Symptoms can include:

  • chest pain – the chest can feel like it is being pressed or squeezed by a heavy object, and pain can radiate from the chest to the jaw, neck, arms and back
  • shortness of breath
  • feeling weak and/or lightheaded
  • overwhelming feeling of anxiety
  1. Choking:

Choking is a major accident that is very common among all ages and it must be treated urgently and immediately. The term choking is used for the blockage of the airway by some object. This can be food or choking by another object and it should be treated swiftly otherwise it will prove to be fatal for the person.

If a casualty is choking encourage them to cough. If it is just mild this will clear the obstruction and they should be able to speak to you.  There are different techniques to deal with choking for children and infants.

  1. Wounds:

Wounds can occur not only in offices or at the workplace but these can also occur at home. One of the most common accidents, it needs to be treated immediately. There are different kinds of bleeding and that ranges from the most minor scrape to the more dangerous type that can lead to blood loss and provide a high risk of infection. If blood loss is severe then this can result in shock.

You should have basic knowledge of treating both kinds of wounds, minor and major. According to the Mayo Clinic, you must wash your hands and put gloves on before treating the injury. Remove all blood from the injury and apply the pressure to stop the continuous bleeding. Apply the bandage after the bleeding has been stopped.

  1. Burns:

Burns are best treated by medical professionals, however, to help in this situation follow this first aid advice:

  • Immediately get the person away from the heat source to help stop the burning
  • Cool the burn with cool water for around 10 to 30 minutes.  Please do not use ice, iced water or any creams or greasy substances such as butter
  • remove any clothing or jewellery that is near the burnt area of skin, but please do not move anything that is stuck onto the skin
  • make sure the person keeps warm – for example you can use a blanket – but please take care not to rub it against the burnt area
  • cover the burn by placing a layer of cling film over it
  • use painkillers, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, to help treat any pain
  1. Insect bite or Sting:

Another most common injury that can occur is an insect bite or sting. Most bites and stings are treated by:

  • washing the affected area with plenty of soap and water
  • placing a cold compress (a flannel or cloth soaked in cold water) over the affected area to reduce swelling

If it is a more poisonous insect bite then call immediately for an ambulance or seek professional medical help.
